A former West End musical star is suing the Met Police for almost £600,000, claiming that he suffered a ‘career-wrecking ankle ligament injury’ due to an aggressive and unjustified stop-and-search outside Kensington Police Station. At the time of the incident he had been retrieving a stolen motorbike helmet visor.
The claimant was a ballet star who had performed in a number of high-profile productions. However, due to the alleged use of excessive force his career was brought to an end, with the dancer suffering permanent ankle ligament damage, along with soft tissue injuries to his hand, wrist, and fingers.
According to the claimant, the police officers stamped on his foot and ankle while twisting his arm, slammed him against a wall, and struck him multiple times. Medical evidence has been provided to support his claim that the crucial ankle injury was most likely caused by the way he was incorrectly restrained.
The Met Police deny all liability, alleging that the claimant was aggressive and resisted the search. The Commissioner further claims that his career was already in decline due to injury, refusals of lower-paid work, and fewer professional opportunities.
The case highlights the devastating impact that excessive force and police misconduct during a stop-and-search could have on someone’s life and livelihood.
